Why does stress cause weight gain?

I used to underestimate the effect stress had on me when it came to managing my weight and sticking to my diet and exercise. Now that I understand the power of the Stress Monster, I am a lot more mindful about preventing stress and, when I start to feel it creep in, examine its causes and do some damage control.

Why does stress so often lead to overeating or going off our diets? There are many reasons; let's start with a bit of biochemistry, focusing on the hormone coritsol.
